How do women tell their lived experiences through the historical texts they left behind? How do gender historians use their gender lens to uncover the specific life stories of marginalized subjects that were once shadowed under the grand narrative of Hong Kong histories? What are the joys and challenges of listening to the historical voices of women? What challenges does the field of women’s history in Hong Kong face? In this research workshop, we have invited three experienced gender historians from the History and Gender Studies Department to share their personal journeys in researching, filming, and writing about the lives of women in Hong Kong history. By talking about how women “talked” in the past, we wish to create an engaging platform to share our research and methodological reflections on studying women and other marginalized groups in Hong Kong history.
Speakers:
Dr. Staci Ford, cultural historian who looks at women’s lives through popular culture and memoir across national and transnational borders.
Dr. Crystal Kwok, feminist filmmaker, amplifying untold histories around gender, race, and the body
Dr. Carol Tsang, historian of social history, specializing in the history of women’s health and the politics of reproduction in Hong Kong
