Doing History 101: Workshop for History Students

November 7, 2023 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Are you finding the transition from secondary school to university challenging? Worried about your first History classes? Doing History 101 is here to guide you every step of the way. Our interactive workshops are tailored to equip you with essential skills to excel in history assignments and essays. These workshops are designed to help students develop practical skills in historical research and writing, as well as to offer an opportunity for exchange between staff and students.

Workshop One: The fundamentals

26 September 2023 (Tuesday) 4:30pm-6pm

Unsure what studying History at university involves? Join us as we dive into the world of historical research to discuss the general expectations in our courses and the discipline of History. Together, we will explore how historians begin their research. We will pay special attention to the art of building a good bibliography. While a bibliography often appears at the end of an essay, it is where the writing process begins. We will also discuss the importance of referencing and effective note-taking practices.

Workshop Two: Writing a good essay

7 November 2023 (Tuesday) 4:30pm-6pm

In our second workshop, we will delve into the mechanics of essay writing. Learn how to plan your essay, construct convincing arguments, and avoid plagiarism. We will also discuss common mistakes found in undergraduate-level essays and answer any questions you may have about writing essays.

All students are welcome. Hybrid event: attend in-person or on Zoom. Register at https://forms.gle/4P8QoZ9v4AdAQ72VA to receive venue information and Zoom link. For enquiries, please email chenghl@hku.hk.
