Research Postgraduate Symposia

In 2008 the Department created the Spring symposium to provide an annual occasion on which graduates in history and cognate disciplines from our University and others join together to present their original research in a professional manner.

Since then graduate students from departments across the globe have attended and presented their work. The Spring Symposium provides opportunities for students to outline their intended contributions to their chosen fields, and disciplines, and to hone presentation skills. The event is a showcase of the value of graduate education.

Spring History Symposium 2023

The Department of History at the University of Hong Kong is pleased to announce the return of the annual Spring History Symposium.

We invite research postgraduate students to submit abstracts for the 12th Spring History Symposium, which will be held on 5 May 2023. The one-day conference aims to provide postgraduates with the opportunity to share their research and form connections with an international community of historians.

We welcome abstracts covering topics related to modern history, broadly defined. Postgraduates from related disciplines who use historical approaches are welcome to submit. Presentations will each last approximately 15 minutes followed by a question-and-answer session.

Due to continuing uncertainty about COVID-19 travel restrictions in Hong Kong and in order to establish a broad network of researchers, this year’s conference will be held virtually. We hope this will remove barriers to entry posed by traditional face-to-face conferences.

Those interested in presenting should submit a proposal via our website: hkuhistorysymposium.com. All proposals must include an abstract of no more than 200 words and a brief biography, and all papers must be presented in English. The deadline for submission is 31 January 2023, and applicants will be notified of the results in February. Please direct any enquiries to Ms. Nicole Vaughan, hkuhistorysymposium@gmail.com
