The transition from secondary school to university is often difficult, and for some of you our courses may be the first History classes you have taken. We are here to help. Please join us for two 90-minute workshops to walk you through the basic skills you will need for your history assignments and essays, and to answer other questions and concerns. All students are welcome, and first-year students are especially encouraged.

Workshop One: Getting Started (1st November, Tuesday, 4:30-6:00pm)
This workshop will discuss the key differences between what is expected at secondary school and university. We will start with the very basics, covering how to build a good bibliography, why referencing is important, and how to read effectively. We will also discuss the importance of good note-taking practices. The last half hour will be reserved for Q&A.

Workshop Two: Essay Writing (8th November, Tuesday, 4:30-6:00pm)
This workshop will focus on the mechanics of essay writing. This will include how to plan your essay, what it takes to build a convincing argument, and how to avoid plagiarism. We will also cover some common mistakes seen in undergraduate-level essays. The last half hour will be reserved for Q&A.

You are free to join either or both workshops. Walk-ins are welcome. Registered participants will receive a copy of the resource list discussed in the workshops.
