The Department of History invites you to a series of movie screenings related to the course HIST2109 'Modern France: Culture, Society, Politics', taught by Dr. François Drémeaux.

The series will pursue with a 1993 epic drama directed by Claude Berri. It is an adaptation of the eponymous novel of Emile Zola, which is a true landmark of the French naturalism in literature. The movie focuses on the life of coalminers in northern France in the 1860s, depicting their fight for safety and a better treatment. This powerful reconstitution of a dire era evokes the rise of the working class and the birth of the first French unions.

Screening in French with English subtitles.

All are welcome. No registration is required.

The movie lasts 160 minutes.
